Summer Essentials to Stay Cool

Sun is fun but cool rules.  Some tips for horse and rider.

Summer heat and sun can be a wonderful thing, but it can also become a bit much for both horse and rider.  At EQ, we’ve stocked products to help as you don leather boots, gloves, and helmet in 90 degrees.

The first line of defense is the sun shirt – really a staple, even in the show ring.  EQ’s favourite, for training: Kastel Denmark.  Like most, Kastel is UV 50 with vented arms and a variety of collars to be sure you’re getting the amount of coverage you want.  At $75, its a great buy and boasts:

  • Soft/smooth fabric that feels cool and luxurious next to the skin

  • Longer body and arms that drape and cover

  • Contrast collar/zipper/cuff adds refinement and style

  • Beautiful colors that flatter different skin tones and hair colour

Our value favourite is the Ariat Sunstopper – all of the bases covered and with this year’s navy and pink polka-dotted models, just as fun.  At $49.95, it can’t be beat.

Our short-sleeved favourite is the ever-ladylike Asmar technical polo in a rainbow of rich, virbrant colour.

Next, use the right skincare.  Not enough to simply use UVA/UVB blocks from the drugstore, DermaSpa makes an entire system of skincare designed for equestrians to fight not just the sun, but the dirt!  They also distribute Elta MD – yes, that same one you get at the dermatologist, but we sell it for less – in both a tinted and non-tinted version.  Read the ingredients and give it a try.

The crowning glory is the right hat/visor.  We of course sell the Equivisor which sticks to most helmets well, but we also carry the best sun hat and visor – from Scala.  The sun hat is a graceful brim of over 5” which keeps your face and neck in shade.  Their wrap-around visor is easy to store, is adjustable and has ample coverage.

Help for your horse.  These dog days of summer are no picnic for your horse and the cool hose-down is the best solution – but there’s some other little things that help.

  • Protect that pink skin! Grays, paints and those with long blazes suffer from sunburn – try – a sunblock made especially for him, complete with bug repellent

  • Wick the sweat with coolmax and performance saddle pads. Some of our faves are the shaped baby pad (Super light and stays in place) and Coach and Champion lines – durable, beautiful and come with matching bonnets and accessories.

  • Prevent, Manage, and Treat injury with cold therapy – what better time than in the swelling heat.We love boots (battery-operated to stimulate and soothe) and most of the line. They’ve recently refined and renewed their entire product line for the most intelligent, effective, and user-friendly therapy you can find – for horse and rider. They also make heat packs to use with the same products as their ice packs, making them all the more economical and useful.

So there’s a few – but there are so many more!  Contact EQ if you’d like to find out more.
